July 12, 2022 Day 12 Part 2 Mayflower II

Model replica of the Mayflower II

Mayflower II is a full-scale reproduction of the ship that carried the Pilgrims to these shores. While no images or plans of Mayflower exist, plans for Mayflower II were created by combining information from period shipbuilding manuals and descriptions of Mayflower in the primary sources. Built by hand, using the same tools and techniques as shipwrights 400 years ago, this ship crossed the Atlantic in 1957, a gift from the people of England to the United States.

The Whipstaff or ship's helm on the main deck is a long lever that moves the tiller below, which in turn moves the rudder and steers the ship. The helmsman steered by compass heading according to orders from an officer on the half deck above.

I have relatives that came over on the Mayflower.
John Alden, Priscilla Mullins, William Bradford and
William Brewster (12th great grandfather)
